In Sweden, one out of three households get their water from sources contaminated with perfluorinated alkylated acids (PFAA).
ALS Scandinavia offers analyses of water for these substances. Perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl compounds is a large group of synthetic organic substances that are widely spread in the environment and has proven to decompose very slowly. PFAA has been on the market for over 50 years and due to its' properties, it has been used both in industry and households.
Two of the most well-known substances in this group are PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid). However, these are not the compounds most frequently used in products. Instead, substnances such as fluorotelomers are used in products but eventually decomposed to for example PFOS in the environment.
